Rebuilding Together Dayton Recap
by Larry Hudson
Members of Greater Dayton REIA joined an estimated 100,000 volunteers nationwide for the annual National Rebuilding Day (April 29,2017). The event, sponsored by the national non-profit Rebuilding Together, is aimed at helping elderly homeowners remain in their homes. The nonprofit organizes volunteer efforts to make necessary repairs to homes at no cost to the homeowners. Locally, Rebuilding Together Dayton selected 14 homes for repair and gathered 600 volunteers, including more than two dozen from Greater Dayton REIA. The Greater Dayton REIA team did extensive work on a home in Dayton’s Westwood neighborhood – performing tasks including interior and exterior painting, moisture-sealing basement walls, plumbing and wiring repairs. The workday began with heavy rain, but by late afternoon volunteers were planting flowers outside the home’s front door. The homeowner, a woman in her 80s who has lived in the home for five decades, told the team she was grateful for all the hard work and was delighted with the results.
