OREIA Legislative Report, October 2016By: Dan Acton, Legislative Director,Ohio Real Estate Investors Association The OREIA Convention - National Real Estate Strategies Summit is being held November 3-6 at the Great Wolf Lodge in Mason, Ohio. I've been an investor over thirty years and have been amazed the last two years I've participated. The strategies and networking are absolutely incredible! Please visit: www.OREIAConvention.com for more information and registration. OREIA-PAC, OREIA's Political Action Committee, is extremely grateful to Vena Jones Cox. Vena is organizing a fundraiser to raise funds for our PAC. OREIA-PAC is critical to assisting Ohio Legislators that have proven to be helpful to us and the real estate industry. Many times these elected officials are willing to take a stand for you and in doing so, gives their competition ammunition to run against them. In today's climate, it is too easy to lump us all together as the greedy landlords that just love taking advantage of unsuspecting tenants and cities while making millions of dollars every year. We can all afford to increase our costs, right? We need those friends in the Ohio House of Representatives and Ohio Senate that recognize the tough business we are in. OREIA-PAC must stand with those that stand with us! There is still time left to help fellow real estate investors and your own business...and it's FREE!!! Please email ActonCompany@aol.com a list of your properties we could use for a small political sign to encourage relationships with elected officials that work with us. This is a bipartisan effort as we cultivate relationships with all who recognize real estate for the economic engine it is. September was a quiet month in the Ohio Statehouse with legislators on break until after the November election. I received invitations to participate in two "Meet the Candidate" nights I was able to attend. Stark Co. REIA held their event September 27. It was a pleasure to moderate for Connie Collings the second year in a row. Several campaigns, including congressional representation attended and all commented on what a great event it was. The spirited dialogue helped real estate investors understand the importance of activism in the political arena and offered those candidates the opportunity to hear our concerns. Greater Dayton REIA held their candidate night October 05 and had in attendance five State Representatives - including those in leadership in both parties, and a State Senator in leadership and their opponents. Many countywide campaigns also actively engaged with a great crowd. A pleasant surprise for the evening was for Dan Acton to be recognized by Dayton area Representative and Judicial Committee Chairman Jim Butler (OH-37). Of particular importance, Representative Butler's Judicial Committee is one of the most critical we follow. It was great to see OREIA's new Executive Director Chuck Frobose make the drive to network with the GDREIA group. Chuck and I are both making the rounds to our valued local associations.
